Dr. Jeffery S. Pettis, Research Consultant

Consulting on all aspects of honey bee biology, apiculture, and pollination including remote and onsite program reviews, pollination and bee-related program development and expert witness testimony.

As former research leader of the USDA-ARS Bee Research Laboratory in Beltsville, MD and now an independent consultant, Dr. Pettis has focused on improving colony health by investigating ways to reduce the impact of pests, diseases, and pesticides on honey bees.  His research areas include: IPM techniques to reduce the impacts of parasitic mites and disease, host-parasite relationships and bee behavior and effects of pesticides, pathogens, and temperature on queen health and longevity. Dr. Pettis’ research has had a significant impact in the scientific world, with his research papers cited over 22,000 times and a h-index of 74. 

Dr. Pettis is the current President of Apimondia, the International Federation of Beekeeper’s Associations and serves on several international committees including the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). With more than 35 years of research experience conducted in more than 15 countries, over 200 publications and numerous book chapters and popular articles; Dr. Pettis is frequently interviewed by the media for his opinions on worldwide pollinator declines and honey bee health. His research has been featured in all major news outlets including Time magazine, 60 Minutes, BBC and NHK as well as testimony to the U.S. Congress and the UK Parliament and consulting with international organizations such as FAO, EFSA and the European Commission.

Dr. Pettis received undergraduate and MS degrees in Entomology from the University of Georgia and his doctoral degree in Entomology from Texas A&M University in 1992.  Dr. Pettis is also available to speak, in person and remote, addressing many aspects of bee health, pollination, pollinator declines and related issues.

Fee Structure:

Speaking fee: $500 per day of presentation plus travel

On site research or program evaluations: $500 per day plus all travel expenses

Review of documents and report writing: $400 per hour for commercial organizations, $200 per hour for non-profits and beekeepers
